Portable appliance testing (PAT) is the term used to describe the examination of electrical appliances and equipment to ensure they are safe to use. Most electrical safety defects can be found by visual examination but some types of defect can only be found by testing.
A qualified PAT Testing specialist will be able to perform tests and checks on a variety of appliances using PAT testers that will be able to show if the appliance has passed or failed testing including earth continuity, lead polarity, and insulation resistance, among others for more advanced testers.
The Importance of PAT Testing. PAT testing of electrical appliances needs to be an important part of any health & safety policy. The Health & Safety Executive advise that all electrical appliances within all rentable residential properties and all commercial premises undertake annual PAT testing.
Offices, Shops and Hotels – Handheld equipment should be tested every 12 months. Class 1 equipment including stationary and IT equipment should be tested every 48 months. Moveable equipment such as extension leads and portable equipment should be tested every 24 months. Schools – All Class 1 equipment in schools should be PAT tested every 12 months.
